What is a googi-googi anyway?

Ah so many months have passed since our last episode of “The Office”. A new year has arrived and a hollow feeling has entered my chest. I hardly can remember what Jim looks like (!!!). I have devoured TV on DVD (“Extras” is pure genius), thrown myself into busy work and slept away the hours. Then there’s always reality television. I’ve become strangely fascinated by the train wreck that is Scott Baio. I’m weak, what can I say?

A while back Heather proposed a question to me: What is the most cringe-worthy Office moment?

Easy.

I barely had to give her question and second thought. The “Diversity Day” scene where the buttoned-up-shadow-of-Kelly stares blankly at Michael as he taunts her, asking her to try his “googi-googi” is by far the most cringe-worthy.

There is a chapter in my law class where I teach about Canadian rights and freedoms, in particular discrimination in the workplace. I’ve shown both (an edited version, bien sur) “Sexual Harassment” and “Diversity Day”. As much as I love the ridiculous-ness of the racial experiment there is something about the complete silence that encompasses the conference room as Michael foolishly screams out “try my googi-googi.” I literally cringe every single time. In fact, the first time I showed the episode to my students, I had to stop myself and think about what I was doing. It wasn’t funny; it was hands-down truly the most awkward moment of the show for me. Thank goodness for Kelly’s slap breaking the obvious tension. I can’t help but wonder, though, how would OMG-it’s-Ryan-Kelly respond?

So I throw back to Heather: What is the most romantic moment? (No picking Casino Night, either.)
